Shepherd Center provides world-class clinical care, research, and family support for people experiencing complex conditions such as spinal cord and brain injuries, multi-trauma, traumatic amputations, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and pain. Ranked among the top rehabilitation hospitals nationally, Shepherd Center offers an intensive care unit on-site to begin rehabilitation sooner. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) role involves providing basic care to patients, ensuring safety, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality, and supporting daily comfort measures. The PCT works closely with Registered Nurses (RN) to observe and communicate patient condition changes and respond to emergencies. The position is in the Inpatient Spinal Cord Injury or Traumatic Brain Injury department, with a set schedule of 12-hour shifts on weekends (Saturday and Sunday 7pm to 7am) plus one weekday shift, totaling 72 hours per two-week pay period. Required education is a high school diploma or equivalent, with no professional certifications required, though CNA certification is preferred. One year of hospital or long-term care experience is preferred, or nursing students with clinical instruction. Skills required include basic computer skills, effective communication, critical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to provide multi-skilled direct patient care. Physical demands include transferring and positioning patients up to 35 lbs. The work environment is a normal patient care setting with potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and infectious viruses. The role emphasizes professional growth, teamwork, and delivering compassionate care to help patients regain independence and dignity.
