Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

*Duties Continued: The physician participates in teaching and supervising Addiction Medicine Fellows, Psychiatry Residents, and Medical Students. The Addiction Specialty Physician will primarily provide outpatient substance use disorder care, including psychiatric and medical care in accordance with privileges and state/federal guidelines supporting the Mental Health Service. The Phoenix VA Addiction Psychiatry section is expanding, emphasizing ambulatory services for veterans with substance use disorders. The physician will support veterans referred for Buprenorphine treatment and those discharged from inpatient psychiatry and residential care, benefiting from specialty addiction services. Responsibilities include coordinating consults and triage of addiction referrals, participating in team meetings, and collaborating to enhance comprehensive patient care. The role may include providing ambulatory withdrawal management and appropriate higher-level referrals.

Qualifications: To qualify, you must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending training or license completion may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to have met basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved school.
  • Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency Training: Completion of approved residency leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those by ACGME, AOA, or other deemed appropriate programs.
  • Residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and are not considered independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience: Addiction Psychiatry, Dual Diagnosis SUD treatment, Buprenorphine/naloxone management.

Duties

  • Provide outpatient psychiatric services, including face-to-face and telepsychiatry, and medical care within privileges and guidelines.
  • Serve as a liaison between SUD specialty care and outpatient mental health clinics.
  • Treat patients with co-occurring SUD and mental health disorders.
  • Provide coverage for residential rehabilitation units as needed.
  • Screen, evaluate, and admit patients to psychiatric programs.
  • Offer diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services, including psychotherapy, crisis intervention, pharmacotherapy, and patient education.
  • Order and evaluate diagnostic tests.
  • Provide psychiatric on-call coverage.
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and SUD assessments.
  • Prescribe medications including Buprenorphine, Clozapine, and others for addiction and mental health treatment.
  • Monitor patient progress, obtain consent, and perform health promotion activities.
  • Educate patients and families, perform suicide risk evaluations, and carry out other delegated tasks.
  • Provide telephone consultations and supervise medical students and residents.
  • Care modality may include telehealth services.
  • Work with programs like MHICM and provide comprehensive outpatient treatment for SUDs and mental health disorders.
