Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US.
• Residency Training: Completion of residency approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residents enrolled in accredited programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and are not considered independent practitioners.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
• Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry, experience in Pain Management and Addiction Medicine, and related fields.
• Physical Requirements: Must meet physical standards, including passing a physical exam, and be able to perform duties such as lifting, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, and other physical activities. Must be capable of rapid mental and muscular coordination, have depth perception, and distinguish colors. Hearing aid permitted.

Duties

• This is an open continuous announcement until August 18, 2025, with initial application cut-off on June 23, 2025, and subsequent cut-offs every 5 days. Applications received after will be considered as vacancies arise.

• Position at VA Northern California Health Care System (NCHCS) in Martinez, CA, primarily providing addiction services for Substance Use Disorders, especially Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder.
• Responsibilities include conducting assessments, formulating diagnoses, developing treatment plans, managing medications, evaluating medical suitability for withdrawal management, and crisis intervention.
• Prescribe medications including buprenorphine and other psychiatric drugs, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and may have opportunities for teaching and supervision.
• Candidates must be US Citizens or PRA, BE/BC in Psychiatry with addiction training, and hold a medical license in any State. Preferred candidates have additional certifications and relevant experience.
